Maya chews my PNGs
When working 9 to 14 hours a day with Autodesk Maya 8.0 you soon encounter the strangest problems. In my opinioin the most annoying problem is Maya eating up my PNG files and then produce a pnglib Error in an infinite loop while rendering. First I thought it happened because I use a SanDisk 4 GB USB-stick for working (!) but it even happened with an external USB diskdrive and even when saved local. And it doesn’t happen right away.
The problem is that mental ray doesn’t get along too well with TIFFs and replacing all textures with TGAs or even JPGs for all scenes spread across our team of 4 people would be rather risky. Further, we have our set up render-ready scenes on about 10 different workstations. Funny thing is that this issue is exclusively my own, even when logged in with another profile.
So another time the computer hates me – boo hoo – no big deal. So what’s my nugget for you? It’s backup your textures!
Things I am trying so far:
- Making the project path Maya compatible: No spaces, no funny characters, no upper casing
- I just opened a broken PNG in Photoshop and suddenly it worked again. Really a Maya issue? I have to restart
