Shiver my Timbers: Issues with “Treasure Island”
Posted in Essays, Reviews
Scottish novelist Robert Louis Stevenson published his most famous book, Treasure Island back in 1883, a hundred years before I was born. And yes, I know this off the top of my head since Wikipedia is down to protest against SOPA (which I urge you to support, by the way). So Treasure Island is considered a classic, the ultimate pirate novel or, more often, an annoyance in your elementary school life. I read the book recently the first time and this is my report why I think having the book in the curriculum at that point is rubbish.

WALL·E vs. Taxi Driver
Posted in Animation, CGI & Rendering, Films, Rants, Reports, Reviews
I have much time on my hands in Berlin now so I’ve been to the movies. I watched two classics in a charming little theater in the Kastanienallee, Delicatessen and Taxi Driver and two current Hollywood blockbusters in the UCI Colosseum multiplex theater, WALL·E and Burn After Reading. I will not talk so much about the films themselves because that has already been done by people way more proficient than me. No, I will focus on my experiences around and inspired by the movies. With no spoilers, as usual. -

Alone in the Dark
Posted in Dear Diary, Games, Reviews, Video
A premiere here on the Promenade Blog: my first video post! And it’s a rant about the new Alone in the Dark by Eden Games. So if you can stand my voice and my thick accent when talking English then feel free to click the play button. If you prefer to read and click some links: No problemo, what is said can be read here as well. A weekend well spent…
Enjoy!DISCLAIMER: No, I don’t hate the game, in fact it’s quite entertaining. But I needed to vent my anger that I am unable to handle the game controls well. And I die a lot! -

The Dark Knight
Posted in Dear Diary, Films, Rants, Reports, Reviews
I just came home from watching “The Dark Knight” in the UCI Colosseum in Berlin and I have to say: What a bunchload of crap! Really? No, of course not! This movie actually seems to me as one of the best super hero movies there can be — with a sophisticated story off the beaten tracks while staying true with the fans. Read on.

In Rainbows or: A short history of copying
Posted in Music, Random Thoughts, Rants, Reviews
Radiohead‘s latest album is out! And I discovered it four days late. But I like their straight way of marketing: The album only comes as download from their website 1 as a nice .zip with ten mp3s in 160kbps quality. How much does it cost? You decide. No really! You decide! - I know, I know there’s the boxed version too, but it won’t ship until December ↩

Wii|!!M
Posted in Games, Reviews
I just purchased a Wii – now didn’t we see that one coming from a mile away? And another wiimote. And a game additional to Wii Sports, namely Trauma Center: Second Opinion which actually was the reason for getting a Wii in the first place.

“Worst Episode Ever!”; The Simpsons Movie
Posted in Films, Reviews
Ever heard of Gilgamesh? He is the hero of the world’s oldest epic. Gilgamesh becomes a hero on his journeys. That pretty much sums up the Simpsons movie I went to see with Lisa and about 50 other people yesterday. Sitting in the third row of the Royal English Cinema was a better idea thanks to the fairly big screen and the comfortable seats. A short report of our experience follows below. No spoilers, as usual. -

David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE
Posted in Films, Reviews
If you want to see a pair of tits in a non pornographic context then take an arts class or watch art films. Lisa and I went to see David Lynch‘s (not so) newest film INLAND EMPIRE (all caps) in the Rechbauerkino in Graz today (actually yesterday). Because these little artsy theaters don’t sell popcorn or nachos we went to the Cineplexx first, that was swamped with rednecks from the peripherals of Graz and got us a hunk of nachos with cheese and salsa for a bunch of money. Funny thing was that we even made it back downtown in time and got seats in the second row 1. And then INLAND EMPIRE started.Don’t worry! No spoilers ahead!

Read the rest…- The Rechbauerkino theater is fairly small so sitting in the second row is like sitting in the middle of a big theater ↩

My 1990′s, Pt. 1: PC Gaming Mags
Posted in Games, Random Thoughts, Reports, Retro, Reviews
My favorite PC gaming magazine, GameStar decided not to print cheats, tricks and hints for games anymore:The internet has established itself as source for cheats and hints; you will find more up to date and more accurate walk-throughs at www.gamestar.de and on many other sites than possible in the magazine. 1
That is another way of telling that printed media are sooner or later becoming extinct. That’s why I decided to take a look back into the wild and crazy 1990s and my personal experiences with PC-Gaming magazines.
Read the rest…- Original: Das Internet hat sich als Quelle für Cheats und Tipps etabliert, auf www.gamestar.de und vielen anderen Seiten finden Sie aktuellere und ausführlichere Lösungen, als sie in einem Heft möglich sind. ↩
