FMX ’10, Day Two
Posted in CGI & Rendering, Compositing, Films, Lectures, Quotes, Reports, Technology
On the second day we all got late to the first lecture and missed “The VFX of Iron Man” and instead enjoyed the breakfast at our value-priced hotel whose every room was kept in shape for the whole place looked like a museum of 1970′s rustic dwelling. Mrs. Zheng apologized for not having boiled eggs and I downed every bit of orange juice that was left on the buffet because I almost died of thirst the night before. Mrs. Zheng didn’t like seeing me drinking eagerly directly out of the jar but left it at a sullen glance this time. Then we drove off to the Haus der Wirtschaft once again. -

FMX ’10, Day One
Posted in Animation, CGI & Rendering, Compositing, Films, Lectures, People, Quotes, Reports, Technology
I awoke after a terrible night of too little sleep (thank you, insane entertainment-industry sleep-cycle!) and was greeted suspiciously by Mrs. Zheng, the hotel manager, on my way to the hotel’s breakfast premises where the ongoing conversations ebbed as I entered. Too much eyeliner, I thought. But I had other things on my mind. In fact, I was so excited that I ran a red light on my way to the conference. -

Tutorial: After Effects vs. Nuke
Posted in Compositing, Tutorial
Yay! Today my second tutorial for AEtuts+ went online. As usual, it was very labor-intense but from the first comments I got on it, it was really worth it. And that people like my hair.Feel free to check it out yourself here, where you can also see the sneak peek of it. Now I gotta get some some sleep, just came back from holding a live tutorial on the FH Salzburg. Exhausting, but fun!

Make Something Creative!
Posted in Compositing, Computing, Dear Diary, Tutorial
Wassup, y’all? I’m back! Back from the vault, back from grinding merrily away 20 to 30 hrs a day on my diploma thesis and back from LaTeX formatting hell. Through my veins still runs a little amount of blood among all that caffeine and so I’m announcing my new credo for 2010: Make Something Creative Every DayWeek! -

Mass Media Whore
Posted in CGI & Rendering, Compositing, Computing, Dear Diary, Random Thoughts, Reports
On Wednesday it was the day I had been waiting for since August. It wasn’t a spectacular day for many other people and by god not one of the best days in Germany’s TV-film era. It was one of those days the people in Germany, Switzerland and Austria were sitting in front of their TVs, eventually watching Die Patin on RTL. What’s so special about this mediocre adaptation on a random day? Ten shots of this movie were composited by yours truly.

Wired
Posted in Compositing, Reports, Tutorial
I am sitting here in my new favorite café/restaurant in Berlin, the Rebellion des Zimtsterns 1 and wait for the dish of the day. I really need a break from the inconvenient truth I have learned a few minutes ago. If you read on there’s also a short tutorial on a possible wire removal workflow. Skip it, if you already know it.
EDIT: Of course I couldn’t finish this lengthy post in one lunch break so I posted it the next morning.
Read the rest…- translates to The Rebellion of the Cinnamon Star ↩

Rise and Shine
Posted in Compositing, Dear Diary, Reports
Monday was my first day of many other to come at rise visual effects Berlin as an intern. Strangely it’s exactly as I imagined it, maybe even a little boring — but hey: It’s my first week and they won’t hand me critical or very creative stuff right away because the team is a little stressed keeping a deadline for a feature film project due in 2009. I hope that I’ll be involved in stuff for the big screen myself sooner or later…

Digital Cinematography
Posted in Compositing, Films, Reports, Technology, Video
Another convention report, my apologies! I haven’t thought that I would be on so many (= two) conventions in the field of digital film in such a short span of time. But attending the Digitale Cinematographie convention this Thursday in Munich was something way out of the ordinary because a little dream never dreamed came true: Seeing my work on the grandeur of a real IMAX theater silver screen.

Application Angst
Posted in Dear Diary, Reports
Yesterday I was asked how many applications I had sent out so far and I could easily count to two: My application at Scanline, that I delivered personally in mid-February at their facility on the Bavaria Studios, and the online application as an intern at Digital Domain a few days ago, as you already know. And now I am getting more and more concerned that I won’t get a decent internship – preferably in the US. So today I began spreading some more emails to California, namely to CafeFX and The Orphanage. I keep my fingers crossed that one of them will at least contact me. I’m feeling angsty!

The max_result_rect error in After Effects
Posted in Computing, Rants, Vista Issues
Just wanted to let you know: After Effects CS3 is bitchy, unstable and has a bad performance: It crashes suddenly and with no reason, while it stays in RAM and on screen forever when you quit. And it produces errors with gray-scale and/or CMYK PNGs.
