Storing A Tile’s Neighbor in a Single Variable

Recently I was playing around on a notepad with some grid-based game mechanics, such as the influence of direct neighbors of a unit on the grid. As I was plotting a 3-by-3 grid with the unit itself occupying the cell in the middle, I stumbled on a very memory efficient way to store a unit’s 8 possible neighbors.
